Roger Standing, Commander of The British Empire, and the Prime Minister's Special Adviser for Education, is murdered. DCI Tom Caton is not short of suspects. But if this is a simple mugging gone wrong then why has MI5 ransacked his apartment, and why is Special Branch disrupting the investigation? And why are the widow and her son taking the news so calmly?
Roger Standing was not what he seemed...and something is rotten in the corridors of power. Will the killer strike again?

The Head Case DCI Tom Caton Manchester Murder Mysteries Series Book 2 edition by Bill Rogers Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

Again, having read the books out of order was a little odd, but the writing is good, aside from the typos and other errors. I really enjoy the interaction between Tom and his team. In this book, a headmaster gets killed and Tom and his team are on the trail of the killer. A fly in the ointment however, is the MI5/MI6 involvement messing up their case. What is going on with that? The "bereaved" wife and son are also suspects for their seeming lack of care that the headmaster is killed. As we learn more about the victim, we discover that he was a truly despicable character and are almost rooting for the killer. A well-written tome, I will read more of Bill Rogers.

The Head Case DCI Tom Caton Manchester Murder Mysteries Series Book 2 edition by Bill Rogers Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

I do enjoy the Tom Caton series but the editions are atrociously edited. Does not have any sort of quality control before allowing books to be purchased?
Good solid writing - just make sure you read them in order. Like the flashes of Manchester history. Breaks up the story and makes it more interesting.
DCI Tom Caton seems cool, controlled and in control. This book, indeed the entire series, is an enjoyable police procedural; I feel I know the main protagonists better with each page. A good read and well worth the time.
"The Head Case" was a quick fun read. However, the plotting was clumsy and the use of incomplete sentences throughout the novel as some sort of literary device was very annoying.
I loved The Cleansing due to the technical story telling of the case where it feels like the reader is in the middle of the investigation. And I like that the killer wasn't shown until the very end cause it kept me guessing.
This the second in the Tom Caton series, and I'm warming up to the characters each time out. The mystery itself, again, does not afford much suspense; it just rocks along until the conclusion. It all hung together and was a reasonable ending, if not exciting. I am enjoying the description of Manchester - like a little trip abroad. Caton is becoming more multi-dimensional as are the peripheral characters with the exception of the love interest. She is a profiler and plays a smaller part this time out. She is not terribly well-drawn, but i can get over it. The victims had few redeeming traits which is something of a flaw if you are to care if they died and how. All that aside, I plan to continue the series. The price is right)
My first exposure to Bill Rogers’ Tom Caton series was a sample of “A Trace of Blood.” I was surprised to find the first part placed in Manchester, New Hampshire rather than Manchester, England, and doubly surprised to find the New England Yankees in the story speaking broad Britlish, saying that the paperwork would be “sorted” and describing a traffic incident as hit-and-skip. The American phrases would be “taken care of” and “hit-and-run.” But, of course, most of the series is placed in England, and you don’t have to know what a “sausage barm” is to follow the language.
It is best to read them in order, as another reviewer said, as there is a gentle and pleasant love story that emerges gradually from one novel to the next. Individually, most of the novels are badly edited, with commas and quotation marks occurring pretty much at random, but they are not as bad as many e-books, and two are quite clean. The proofreader gets a much deserved acknowledgement in those books.
The plots are a bit formulaic, but it is a pretty good formula. The reader has to sit through some fairly dull police team meetings (in which background information is revealed) but the stories are gripping at the minor and major climaxes. The characters are well drawn and round enough that one can care about them, especially after one has read two or three of the series. Some of the villains and the action are a bit over the top, but that’s in the nature of the genre. All in all (to quote a Cockney friend of mine) “good value f’money.”
